Railway back in public ownership

Great British Railways

Some train services in south east London and Kent are now back under public ownership.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which runs Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express services are now under Department for Transport (DfT) control.

GTR is responsible for transporting millions of people, accounting for one in six passenger rail journeys.

Great British Railways (GBR) will eventually operate all passenger services by the end of 2027.

Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport tweeted on Sunday.

No changes to services have yet been announced by the government.  Trains will eventually be painted in a union flag colour scheme.
